Safety

Bio-Safety(synX)

In our lab, we use synthetic yeast which has a synthetic yeast chromosome X. In order to prevent synX leaking into the environment and threatening the ecological equilibrium, we have enacted the relevant regulations. When the yeasts emerge on solid medium, we will pick it into a clean tube, as the template for PCR or inoculating it in the liquid medium. The next step of experiment such as transformation, PCR or other experimental steps often produce waste. For residual bacteria fluid, we gather it into a special waste bottle and then inactivate these yeasts through steam sterilization at high temperature and pressure. So we can pour them into the sink without futher problems. Similarly, we gather those solid waste generated during the experiment into a separate box labeled "Synthetic yeast", such as solid medium or centrifuge tube containing synX, after steam sterilization at high temperature and pressure. As for reusable experimental consumables ,we can kill microbes by alcohol sterilization or flame burning.

Public Propaganda(biosafety video)

The transport of biological agents has a huge impact on the environment. So we, iGEM teams of China, decided to make a relevant video for more people to learn the details in the transport. The whole biosafety video was made by 12 teams and every team took different topics, but all based on Yale biosafety manual.

Lab works

Before we started our experiment, we first trained in laboratory safety knowledge. What's more, we invited teacher Yuan and Li to explain us the safety knowledge. Our team members were guided by different graduate or doctoral students strictly to carry out correct experiment operations. After we started our experiment, we created a set of laboratory safety manuals that everyone should strictly observe or would be criticized. We also conducted a questionnaire investigation about security knowledge. In which the substandard people need to re-learn the relevant knowledge. There are some examples.

enter the provisions

Only approved personnel can enter the laboratory work area. The laboratory door should be kept closed. Children should not be approved or allowed to enter the laboratory work area.

operational specifications

Strictly prohibited with the mouth of the pipette. Strictly prohibited to put the experimental material in the mouth. Do not lick the label. All the technical operation to minimize the formation of aerosols and tiny droplets to carry out the way. The occurrence of spills, accidents and obvious or may be exposed to infectious substances, must be reported to the laboratory safety officer.

laboratory work area

The laboratory should be kept clean and tidy, is not allowed to display and experiments have nothing to do with the items. The occurrence of potentially hazardous material spill and after the end of every day, must be removed from the work surface pollution. All contaminated materials, specimens and culture in the waste or clean before recycling, must remove the pollution. In the packaging and transport must comply with national and / or international regulations.

Personnel protection

In the laboratory work, at any time must wear uniforms. Wear suitable gloves when performing direct or accidental exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials or infectious animals. Wash hands after removal of gloves. After dealing with infectious experimental materials and animals, and before leaving the laboratory work area, must wash their hands. There may be splashing, in order to prevent the eyes or face by the splash of injury, should wear safety glasses, masks (masks) or other protective equipment. Not in the laboratory through the toe shoes. Prohibit eating in the laboratory work area, drinking water, smoking, makeup and handling contact lenses. Prohibit the storage of food and beverage in the laboratory work area. Used in the laboratory protective clothing and daily clothing can not be placed in the same cabinet.
