<p>It’s essential for education to cultivate the enlightening scientific thought of primary and middle school students.  </p>

<p>In order to popularize synthetic biology and the project of our iGEM team,  on April 20th, we joined the Scientific Festival in Shenzhen Foreign Languages School and held the presentation for our whole students . Scientific Festival assembles and inspects the achievement in technological education, which is a stage for students to exhibit their talent on science.  </p>

<p>We introduced iGEM competition, synthetic biology within its application, and other biological technologies to the senior high school students. The speaker used simple and understandable words and a interesting video to attack audiences’ attention deeply. </p>

<p>Meanwhile, we also gave a lecture for junior high school students. On June 5th, we held a presentation at junior high school of Shenzhen Foreign Language School. Many students joined in this presentation. Before the speech, we simply introduced our team and displayed the prizes of following questions so that students would pay more attention toward our speech.  </p>

<p>At first, we related the discovery and exploration of DNA with humorous words. During the speech, we returned the story about the exploring experience by using the sitcom and alternated some interesting questions. Then, we introduced iGEM and synthetic biology. In order to let students know about synthetic biology more clearly, we played a biological video. The fancy frame and vivid language caused the thought and communication between students. </p>

<p>Before these two presentation, we sorted out the information from investigation in hospital and on line questionnaire about Trichophyton rubrum. We integrated the public myth from the questionnaire and methods of guarding dermatosis into our presentation, reminding students not to underestimate the harmfulness of dermatosis; guard the disease in time; and protect health.  </p>

<h1>Public Speech in Shenzhen Bookcity

<p>The bookcity in the centre of Shenzhen has the biggest population of all the same kind, customers of all ages and identities visit it often. So we decided to hold a speech in the building including introducing iGEM and our project. </p>

<p>To rent the space, we got in contact with the workers of Bookcity in advance and after some time of negotiating, we got the permission to hold the speech for free. </p>

<p>On July 29th, 10 a.m., we’ve already gathered a large group of audience so we started at the planned time. </p>

<p>Three of our members made speeches based on different topics which were brief introduction of iGEM, the same for Synthetic Biology and Melanoma. </p>

<p>Before we started, some of our members have already started sending out questionnaire about Melanoma to the audience presented, which was mostly made up of students and mums with their kids. </p>

<p>When watching our audience filling in the questionnaire, we found that most of them have heard of skin cancer but don’t exactly know the related symptoms or even never heard of Melanoma. </p>

<p>This has firmed our determination to spread this type of diseases out and make it known to more. </p>

<p> During the speech, we often heard our audience having discussion. The content is unfamiliar to most of them but they all stopped what was at hand to listen through the whole speech.</p>

<p>In the end we set a simple pop quiz about our speech and our audience answered actively, with all the questions answered. This revealed that they listened really carefully. </p>

<p>More people got to know related information about Melanoma and our project. This also showed to the public that there are thousands of people of various ages and identites(Such of us high schoolers) fighting on the way of developing better way of skin cancer treatment, learning advanced knowledge, trying on various technologies to get nearer to brighter future for human health. </p>

Project execution

Former Project — Treatment of Trichophyton rubrum infection by β-human defensin-3.

We chose Trichophyton rubrum at first as our project for it is widely spread in a large amount of certain type of people and lack of efficient and simple treatment.

Changing Direction

After public survey and discussing with experts, we realized that the project on Trichophyton rubrum study was almost infeasible. Through the investigation and communication, we found that treating skin cancer was a more essential and necessary researching object. So we decided to shift the focus of our project from Trichophyton rubrum to skin cancer.
