7th Grade Introduction to Synthetic Biology
We held several teaching sessions, where we introduced iGEM and the basics of Synthetic Biology, such as transcription and translation, to young scientists in seventh grade. During these sessions, we asked the students to build constructs through the use of paper representation of biobricks, run gel electrophoresis, and taught them how to correctly use of a micropipette.
Figure 1-1 Paul: Little is known about the mystical creature known as the "Paul". Donning a lab coat, he is usually found carefully educating the young about the mysteries of science.
Figure 1-2 Katie: This test subject is known only as "KT". Here, you can see her holding a pamphlet full of primitive dna constructs, passing this knowledge onto the next generation.
Kindergarten Science Experiments
Our iGEM team also hosted several kindergarten teaching sessions to teach the kindergarteners the power of observation and the basics of science. In these teaching sessions, we had the students look at a penny under the microscope to teach them the fundamental skills of microscopy. We also used soap to push food coloring apart in a milk solution to show how surface tension can be disrupted. After the students took part in the first two activities, we rubbed a balloon on the children’s heads to introduce static electricity while also using refraction lenses to look at white light to show them that white light is made up of various colors. At the end of the session, the kindergarteners were taught that diaper powder was a super absorbent polymer.
Bioethics Panel
We hosted a Bioethics Panel, in which we invited students and teachers to discuss the moral concerns of our project. To encourage the participants to consider the problems from multiple perspectives, we assigned each of them roles, then had them answer some questions from the perspective of that role in a context related to our project. Next, we asked the participants to answer to the same questions as themselves, and asked if the role-play had any effect on their opinions. Generally, the participants showed concerns over the quality of wastewater entering rivers and oceans, as well as the potential cost nanoparticle treatment can cause.
