| − | <p><span class="moment">At the moment,</span> I am done with my masters (technically); I am still a student though... Pro-tip: try to be a student (at heart duh!) as long as possible; you’ll live more. <span class="precisely">More precisely,</span> my Masters in Electrical Engineering (focus: Energy and Power Electronics) is done; I still need to apply for the degree though. Currently jobless but trying to gain experience through projects and thus iGEM. <span class="background">My background</span> is in electrical engineering (power electronics, electrical machines and drives, renewable energy systems, power systems), with some programming, duh! <span class="interested">I am very interested in</span> almost EVERYTHING; but mainly renewable energy, power electronics, electrical drives and... BIOLOGY! (since like forever) Used to visit my dad’s lab when he was doing his PhD in biotechnology (when genome sequencing was in its early stages)... So maybe it all started there and look now: me at iGEM; me likes. I think every engineer after masters should go to synthetic biology and then let’s all make a beautiful world to live in. <span class="igem-member">As an ETHZ iGEM 2017 team member,</span> I plan to cure cancer (if it hasn’t already been done, but my cure will be awesome), solve the energy crisis, eliminate world hunger and maybe... Through iGEM, contribute a really tiny bit to foundational advancement in SynBio with my AWESOME team members. <span class="free-time">In my free time</span> I cook and eat a lot, sometimes sketch, read about ancient-world history, mythology, and really sometimes do some wing-chun and yoga... My background is in biology. I started with a biology BSc and after 2 years, I specialized in biotechnology. I am very interested in how and why matter assembles to understand itself. Apart from that, I’m interested in developing bio-technologies away from basic research and towards real world applications. As an ETHZ iGEM 2017 team member, I'll try to find a balance between free creativity and structured work. Thus, I’m mainly focusing on synthetic biology and trying to get some understanding of maths and computational stuff. My background is molecular and cellular biology, also at ETH. I am very interested in (almost) anything that other people get enthusiastic about. Scientifically, translating the amazing things that synthetic biologist have already achieved into something useful or even more amazing. | − | <p>At the moment, I am finishing my Masters in Biotechnology at ETH. More precisely, in my Master Thesis I am trying to improve biocatalysts (mainly artificial metallo-enzymes) of industrial interest by developing a high-throughput screening technology based on microfluidics and cell-free extract technology. My background is in Chemical Engineering with specialization in Biotechnology. Throughout my Diploma studies I came to realize the super cool tools that biology can provide, in order to tackle actual life problems. For this reason, in my Diploma Thesis I studied enzymes that can contribute to the sustainability of the 2nd generation of biofuels. As I said before, cool stuff... I am very interested in Protein Engineering and Synthetic Biology, because these fields can satisfy my tendency towards both engineering and biology. As an ETHZ iGEM 2017 team member, I plan to help a lot in the lab and try to “disturb” the modelling people in order to get the most out of our “world-saving” project. Also as a safety manager, I will be the terror for all the Lab People muahahahaha… (Just kidding, I will try to be nice..) | − | <p>At the moment, I am studying immunology, exploring machine learning, and investigating DNA computing. More precisely, I am balancing the workload of my Computational Biology MSc at ETH with the demands of my participation in the iGEM team. My background is quite conventional; I hold a diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I majored in Computer Science and then I got lured to bioinformatics by carefully placed traces of big data. I am very interested in the creative chaos which ensues when serious computing power is introduced to various disciplines. Unsurprisingly, Synthetic Biology felt like home from the start: we are optimizing peptides, composing operons, hacking bio-circuits... Is it a cliché to marvel at how tiny and powerful nature can be at the same time? Could there be a discipline more fascinating for an engineer than molecular biology, in all its elegant efficiency? As an ETHZ iGEM 2017 team member, I plan to save everyone's time by exploring wild ideas in simulations. I will be failing fast and often, unashamedly. Some of my endeavours will hopefully prove feasible; until then, I'll keep the GPUs sweating. In the meantime, I will be organising and presenting my teammates accomplishments as the eye candy they should be. My secret side project is to make my teammates use more open source systems than they currently do, starting with LaTeX. In my free time, I'll be walking along the lake, reading about politics and dreaming about chocolate. | − | <p>At the moment, I’m in the last year of my Master in Biotechnology, as my other fellows from Basel. More precisely, I am currently working on microfluidics and its application in directed evolution. I find this to be an awesome tool enabling biologists to explore better and faster the wonders of the world of synthetic biology. And what is better than being able to create and build your very own microfluidic chip from scratch? My background is actually quite a mess… :) After I was force-fed with mathematics and physics for two years (until I couldn’t bear it anymore), I infiltrated the École Polytechnique (Paris-Saclay campus) where I have been able to broaden my horizons with economics, computer science, entrepreneurship and… Biology! Which brought me here at the Biotechnology department to go on with the overwhelmingly cool promises of synthetic biology. But I definitely remain an engineering guy in my bones. ;) I am very interested in microfluidics, a field that seems to me to be at a right and balanced spot between an already very characterized field like microelectronics and a still fuzzy science like biology, which we still cannot understand very reliably. My dream would be to go on with a PhD in this promising field and then why not found a startup if an opportunity pops up! I believe that iGEM will be a very valuable experience regarding team work and taking a project from 0 to 1 in a very short but intense period. This is definitely how startups work and I love that! As an ETHZ iGEM 2017 team member, I want to help bring a multidisciplinary perspective to our iGEM project, actively contributing to make the link between the modeling and experimental teams stronger. I will also help in the lab, as I already have done a couple clonings and PCRs when I was little (I didn’t say they all worked out...)
