On April 29, we were invited to participate in the exchange meeting organized by the Shenzhen University, There were eight teams attending, including Sun Yat-sen University, South China Agricultural University, South China University of Technology and so on, total there was 68 people participating in the meeting. The meeting was divided into team project display session and free discussion session. Project display includes 10-minute presentation and 5-min Q&A. This first picture shows that our team leader introduced our project at the meeting, and we are all serious listening.

The aim of this project is to combine optogenetics and biotechnology, by using genetically modified organisms as the core carriers, to develop a novel method for degrading pesticide residues in contaminated soil. We employed a novel light inducible/repressive system that can efficiently overexpress heterogenous proteins that are able to degrade pesticides chemicals organophosphorus and parathion-methyl pesticide, without the need of using toxic and expensive chemicals. In addition, we plan to develop a device that integrates monitoring and data-sharing functions that help applying this system to on-site pesticide residue detection and degradation. We hope to achieve a microbial degradation method with low toxicity, low cost and high efficiency which serves a positive role in maintaining ecological balance.

This year, as part of our project promotion and potential landing of the products, we participated into a number of entrepreneurship competitions. To our surprise, we have been doing pretty well so far! We came first at the university-division of the Collegiate Student Entrepreneurship Competition, organized by ShenZhen city council. We won a 50,000 RMB money prize, which helps us a lot with regards to our iGEM funding.

Based on our business plan, our products target to the high-end users, such as people with private gardens or balconies and interesting in growing vegetables and fruits. In early July, we went to a private garden for soil testing and project promotion. We are very honor to be mentored by a judge from the Collegiate Student Entrepreneurship Competition. He gave us lots of helpful information about the economic value of our business plan as well as social values.

In late July, we went to a dragon fruit orchard for second round of human practices. As shown in the picture, there were large amount of discarded pesticide packaging scattered around the orchid, including fungicide carbendazim that our project works on. This indicates that the soil of the orchard may be seriously polluted by pesticides. We also conducted a survey with the owner about the types of pesticides and the amount they use. The owner suggested that they were aware of the danger and toxicity of chemical pesticides, and gradually switching to the bio-grade pesticides.

we hope that the emergence of our products as well as our persistent propaganda, people can fully comprehend the harmfulness of the chemical pesticides on the soil, underground water, as well as on the fruits, vegetables, and eventually into our body.

SSTi-SZGD---Description

Guardian of the wheatland A product for the degradation of soil pesticide residues

Project Introduction

The level of pesticide usage in China is 2.5 times above the world average. In June 2016, the total output of chemical pesticides in China was around 3.347 million tons, up by 7.17% compared with the same period of 2015. A range of chemical and physical technologies have been widely applied in the degradation of pesticide residues. These techniques are of high in accuracy and easy to be manipulated characteristics. However, the shortfalls come with high in cost, harmful to non-target organisms, food, plants and soils, and likely to cause secondary pollution, etc.
