Human practices is an important aspect of iGEM NYUAD project. As NYU Abu Dhabi is located in UAE and has a very international student body, the goal was to take advantage of our location, educate and spread the word about iGEM.


Silver Medal Human Practices

For the Silver Medal requirements iGEM NYU Abu Dhabi hosted a high school workshop, where students from Brighton College in Abu Dhabi, UAE, visited the university and had an opportunity to experience iGEM research environment. Furthermore, the team published a magazine “Synthetic Biology 101”, which was distributed NYU and Brighton College students. iGEM NYU Abu Dhabi also helped and advised a student from NYU New York campus how to create an iGEM team. Gold Medal Human Practices

For the Integrated Human Practices, iGEM NYU Abu Dhabi wanted to explore the demands of the possible device buyers. The team approached two potential markets: food vendors in areas where food safety risks are high (Pakistan, Indonesia) and the student body of NYU Abu Dhabi, which is comprised of students from 110 countries and due to the university location tend to travel to places with compromised food safety at least 1-2 times per year. The responses from both surveys were taken into account and the product was shaped to match the demands of the target. Read more

Education and Engagement

For the Education and Engagement the team held a workshop in Ar-Rahmah Mosque, Yogyakarta, Indonesia for elementary school students. The team also held presentations in NYU Abu Dhabi during courses Foundations of Science 1 & 2 and Foundations of Science 3 & 4 in order to build up on the theme of the courses: the integration of sciences and engineering.
