Removal of ammonia using only Paracoccus Denitrificans
Our project aims to create a complete ammonia removal device by combining nitrification and denitrification capabilities within one single bacteria, Paracoccus denitrificans. This bacteria is a facultative anaerobe that natively performs denitrification, which is the conversion of nitrites and nitrites into inert nitrogen gas. Our task is to insert several genes responsible for nitrification from a nitrifying bacterium, Nitrosomonas europaea, into P. denitrificans.
