Removal of ammonia using only Paracoccus Denitrificans
Our project aims to create a complete ammonia removal device by combining nitrification and denitrification capabilities within one single bacteria, Paracoccus denitrificans. This bacteria is a facultative anaerobe that natively performs denitrification, which is the conversion of nitrites and nitrites into inert nitrogen gas. Our plan is to transform several genes responsible for nitrification from a nitrifying bacterium, Nitrosomonas europaea, into P. denitrificans. Next, we will perform full-scale characterization of our device and assess its ability to replace the co-culture of bacteria living in Wastewater Activated Sludge (WAS) at wastewater treatment plants.
