UK-Meetup

From the 18th-19th August we had the pleasure of
co-hosting the UK meetup with UCL and Warwick iGEM teams (to host a 2-day
meetup). The event was attended by 14 teams and was spearheaded by talks
from specialist academics. The event also included poster presentations,
debates about topics within the realm of synthetic biology as well as
practicing presentations for the Giant Jamboree!

After the presentations teams had an opportunity to briefly present their
projects and focus on difficulties they were experiencing, this allowed for
a comprehensive troubleshooting opportunity for all teams in order to
better help each other develop their projects.

Dr Stefanie Frank and Dr Vitor Pinhiero were invited to give a talk about
their research topic within the field of synthetic biology. Students were also
given an opportunity to question the lecturers on their projects and obtain advice.

The second day was held firstly at UCL where the UCL team hosted a debating session.
This was a thought provoking day with many good arguments emerging from the sessions.

Afterwards we moved across London to the shard, which Warwick kindly offered to hire
for the day. It was a great event with an excellent opportunity to practice our presentation
for the giant jamboree.

We made surveys to assess what teams enjoyed about this year’s UK meetup to obtain some
feedback and see where we could possibly improve (see survey at the bottom)

Results of survey

93% of attendants found this event useful

86% of students found the event better than they had anticipated

95% of students said that they would attend similar events in the future

89% of students said they found this event useful

Thank you to ICCOs for sponsoring us with pizza for the event.
