Our Project
The FSU iGEM team is working on developing a cell-based therapeutic for people with Celiac Disease (CD), an autoimmune disease that destroys the lining of the small intestine when gluten is ingested. Presently, the only treatment available for people with CD is a gluten-free diet, which severely limits their nutritional options and drains their pockets. The current research on potential treatments for CD focuses on approaches using small molecules and biologics, which provide only temporary relief and are not a definite cure.
Our plan is to develop an engineered probiotic that colonizes the gut and provides a long-term solution for the disease. We are working on developing cells that can be ingested and will hinder gluten before it causes any damage within the small intestine. Currently, we are studying several mechanisms by which the cells will operate. We would like the cells to either degrade or sequester gliadin and/or zonulin. Gliadin is a peptide chains in gluten that triggers an inflammatory response in the small intestine of CD patients. Zonulin is a protein that loosens tight junctions in the small intestine and allows gliadin to cross the intestinal lining. We are also evaluating a potential chassis, which would become a resident of the gut microbiome.

Tips
This wiki will be your team’s first interaction with the rest of the world, so here are a few tips to help you get started:
- State your accomplishments! Tell people what you have achieved from the start.
- Be clear about what you are doing and how you plan to do this.
- You have a global audience! Consider the different backgrounds that your users come from.
- Make sure information is easy to find; nothing should be more than 3 clicks away.
- Avoid using very small fonts and low contrast colors; information should be easy to read.
- Start documenting your project as early as possible; don’t leave anything to the last minute before the Wiki Freeze. For a complete list of deadlines visit the iGEM 2017 calendar

Uploading pictures and files
You can upload your pictures and files to the iGEM 2017 server. Remember to keep all your pictures and files within your team's namespace or at least include your team's name in the file name.
When you upload, set the "Destination Filename" to T--YourOfficialTeamName--NameOfFile.jpg. (If you don't do this, someone else might upload a different file with the same "Destination Filename", and your file would be erased!)
