Engagement
We aimed to let more and more people from every group link to synthetic biology and iGEM.

Campus talk

Students are very groups with a strong thirst for knowledge and curiosity, so we went to Tieling High School and gave campus talks to students of different ages about synthetic biology. At the end of the talk, we started a Q&A time, students and their teachers asked a lot and shared their dreams to us. At the same time we did some questionnaire investigations in order to know what they are interesting in and which is the best way for them to touch the synthetic biology.

Synthetic biology propaganda and iGEM new recruiting

We negotiated with some elective teachers and gave a 20min class to students in Tongji University. In this course we introduced basic knowledge of synthetic biology and because there were some students who majored in other specialities, we use kinds of metaphor to make them understand what synthetic biology is.

After that, we use social software to disseminate recruiting information and introduced iGEM to students in Tongji. We hope iGEM will show them a bigger world!

Tongji iGEM X Fablab Shanghai

S.T.E.A.M Education
The fablab Shanghai ’s movement is closely aligned with the DIY, the open source hardware and the free and open source movement, and shares philosophy as well as technology with people from every group.

We established a long-term friendly relations of cooperation with fablab Shanghai and worked together at bio-fablab. We are now preparing for a kit of STEAM Education with a simple and practical bio-toolbox and APP. It is gratifying that Fablab Shanghai gave us helping-hands on industrial mapping and making instruments.

The bio-toolbox is aimed to children, we want to make open source biological instrument at a low cost and make the biological instrument much easier to operation. It may let more people do a biological experiment without the limits of experimental environment and professional knowledge. The toolbox are in the making and will be presented to primary schools and middle schools. Now the tool box has been designed well and will enter the trial soon

In order to give a better user experience, we introduced our project and toolbox to students from School of design and got a lot advice on user experience and new applications

As well as S.T.E.A.M Education is very popular among students and parents, lots of S.T.E.A.M Education schools have been established. But we find that there are no biological-correlated class in China and it is even scarce in the world, so we designed a biology class firstly in China and wanted to let the synthetic biology be known by more community members. We have already contacted some high schools in Shanghai and will add this course as a elective course. Tieling High School would be the first experimental unit. We were happy to hear that schoolmasters had great interest in our course and hope to do our best to spread it.

This course focuses on the education of basic knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology, meanwhile, we introduce synthetic biology to all the students and let them design thire own engineering bacteria. We use a variety of methods to make esoteric theories much easier for them to understand: we use building blocks to annotation synthetic biology; we use similar muisc to show what the variation is and how does the bio-tool BLAST work……And Fablab Shanghai will give them a mechanical course to lead them make simple instrument transferpettor. We think firsthand experience plays the most important role in studying so we teached biosafety and basic experiment to them.

For more information about the course and toolbox you can contact us by sending e-mail to 3141244178@qq.com,we welcome to your consultation.

OPEN NIGHT(with network LIVE)
The first LIVE
We held OPEN NIGHT 1ST on Creative Square to Spreading knowledge to our society. OPEN NIGHT is a activity that everyone can come and listen to the lecture without invitation and express their ideas freely. OPEN NIGHT focus on simplifying knowledge and spreading it accurately to everyone from all the groups. We advertised in the form of online advertising and propelling movement beforehand to let more people knew us and join us. We gave lectures on synthetic biology and transgenic technology to people form community and introduced our project. At the same time, we invited a lot of designers and scholars to make comments in different ways and show their recently results. We have a live webcast so that people who cannot come to OPEN NIGHT can watch our LIVE via live network. We hope OPEN NIGHT can be a great way for people without professional knowledge to learn more on biology. In the Q&A section we also got a lot of good advice from the guests, who thought that our project would be useful for pest control, and that's the reason for us to select pest control as our final topic.

The second LIVE
OPEN NIGHT LIVE 2ND were held for showing iGEM team in Shanghai and people can exchange ideas and ask questions with every iGEM member. It's an honor for us to invite Fudan_China, Shanghaitech, STJU_BioX_Shanghai and ECUST to our OPEN NIGHT. We were delighted to find out that there are more college student from other universities, there was even a girl who watched our first network LIVE in UITC Hefei, where is far away from Shanghai came to OPEN NIGHT and asking questions. Some audience said something about what more can our projuct do.and we added parts (we thought they are reasonable) in our project part. There was also a symposium among iGEM teams after the LIVE and we exchanged our ideas. We also set up a live webcast and gave LIVE to iGEM teams in other provinces.

Before the above work, we did a questionnaire survey to understand what the children and parents want in the class and what they can get from the toolbox. We collect and analyze the data to consider the cost issues and improve our toolbox. We hoped our toolbox could influence more people. The supporting courses are changed with the data analysis to make more aimed people get interested in our toolbox and synthetic biology.

We adjusted the contents of the toolbox and supporting courses according to the results of the questionnaire survey. Here is part of the questionnaire(twenty questions, sample size 417):

Q4.Are you interested in learning more about biology?

Q6.Do you think your children(or if you have a child in the future) need expanding biological knowledge?

Q10.What kind of biological knowledge do you think your child can develop?(multiple-choice question)

Q13.Do you think a toolbox will help your children(or you) learn more about biology?

That's it!
